Learn a language with a real instructor and classmates—wherever you live in the United States. International Language Institute (ILI) in Washington, DC offers live, interactive foreign language group classes, with remote participation available in many of our hybrid classes.

Choose how to attend: hybrid or fully online

Hybrid classes: Most of our foreign language group classes use a hybrid format. Some students attend in person at ILI in Washington, DC while others join the same class live online. Everyone participates with the instructor and classmates in real time.

Fully online classes: Some sections may be conducted entirely online, with all students joining remotely for live, scheduled instruction. Availability depends on the language and term.

In-person attendance: Students who prefer classroom learning can attend eligible sections at ILI in Washington, DC.

How live online and hybrid classes work

Students joining remotely participate in a scheduled class with a live instructor and other learners. In hybrid sections, students in the Washington, DC classroom and students online take part in the same lesson. This is not a self-paced video course: students can ask questions, practice conversation and receive feedback in real time.

What do I need to join? A reliable internet connection, a computer or tablet with audio and video, and a quiet place to participate are recommended. ILI can confirm the platform and any course-specific requirements before enrollment.

Can I join from another state or country? Yes, when remote participation is offered for your selected section. Classes follow scheduled Eastern Time meeting times, so international and out-of-state students should check the time difference before registering.

Can I attend in person instead? Yes. ILI continues to offer classroom-based group language instruction in Washington, DC. Hybrid delivery gives eligible students a choice of joining in person or remotely, subject to the particular section’s format.

Which level should I choose? Review the language-specific level descriptions and ask our Foreign Language Department for placement guidance if you are unsure. The team can also confirm whether your preferred level and schedule permit remote participation.

Unlike self-paced language apps, ILI classes meet at scheduled times with an instructor. You can practice speaking, ask questions and learn alongside other students in real time. Class times are listed in Eastern Time, so check the schedule against your local time zone.

Which class format is right for you?

In-person group classes: Ideal for students who prefer the energy and consistency of learning with classmates in a Washington, DC classroom.

Live online group classes: Ideal for students who live outside the DC area or prefer to join remotely. Some sections are hybrid and some may be entirely online; check the specific schedule for availability.

Live private lessons: Ideal for students who need individual attention, a customized schedule or profession-specific instruction. Explore private and intensive lessons, including intensive daytime programs where available.

ILI may introduce more dedicated in-person-only and online-only group sections as demand supports them. The format of any particular section should be confirmed before registration.

Schedule, tuition and enrollment

Our standard group language courses generally meet over 10 weeks for 25 hours of instruction, with tuition of $400 per level. Formats and availability vary by course. Before registering, check the specific language page or contact ILI to confirm that your preferred section permits live remote attendance.

Prefer individual live online instruction?

ILI also offers live one-on-one language tutorials with an instructor, often delivered online. For accelerated learning, ask about intensive private language training with a customized daily schedule.
